It's now 2009 and 9 is the latest version of PowerDVD, the popular software based multimedia player that is also now the premier Blu-ray player for the PC.
PowerDVD 8 was a modest upgrade from PowerDVD 7, some new concepts that were aimed to make PowerDVD more "fun", as opposed to any real playback improvements. This was in contrast to WinDVD 9, which focused on the HD aspect of movie playback and to better effect. What was worse was that PowerDVD 8 Ultra removed HD DVD playback, which although understandable from a cost cutting perspective, reduced the functions of PowerDVD while making the comparison with WinDVD (which still played HD DVDs) more favorable to WinDVD's advantage. So while there wasn't anything wrong with PowerDVD, and a 4.5/5 score proved this, it also wasn't as "right" as it should have been.
So now we have PowerDVD 9. Will this version be "more of the same" (not necessarily a bad thing), or will Cyberlink give us a few surprises that will genuinely improve the usage experience? Read on to find out ...
