In an ongoing fight against intellectual piracy, federal authorities seized the domain names of nine websites accused of letting users watch on-demand versions of first-run movies, sometimes just hours after its theatrical release.
These nine sites were among the most popular for distributing illegal copies of new movies, such as "Toy Story 3" and "The A-Team".
The nine sites had registered their domain names via U.S.-based registration services, allowing authorities to take control of their site addresses. Some of the computers were based in various states if the U.S. as well as other countries.
The ICE issued takedown notices to the following movie sites:
- Movies-links.TV
- nowmovies.com
- thepiratecity.org
- filespump.com
- planetmoviez.com
- zml.org
- tvshack.net
- ninjavideo.net
- thisninja.net
The ICE wouldn't break down the exact numbers, but says that intellectual property violations cost American companies billions of dollars and the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs.
