EMI, Universal and a bunch of smaller labels have been selling DRM-free songs online for awhile now, but they may soon start releasing music through the unrestrictive MP3 format as well.

Amazon is set to announce a promotional giveaway of one billion MP3s during next year’s Super Bowl. It is critical these 1 billion songs be DRM free so that they will play on all devices.

Wal-Mart has reportedly given an ultimatum to the big name record labels, including Warner Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, demanding they provide DRM free mp3 tracks available in 2008 “or else”.
