The Blu-ray Disc Association has just approved a new format, BDXL, of Blu-ray discs that increases its total storage capacity from 50GB to 128GB (Re-writable will be 100GB) but unfortunately is not backwards compatible with older hardware.

The new disk technology goes three to four layers deep on the disk, and a more powerful laser will be required to read it properly.  That is the reason for having to upgrade your hardware.
