Panasonic and NEC have chosen to go with LiMo, which is a true open source Linux-based operating system, for their new mobile devices.  They are working on nine of these phones that will feature the open-source operating system.

KDDI (a Japanese mobile carrier) and Immersion Corp (a touchscreen company) are teaming up for project LiMo in hopes to stand out and grab the attention of larger manufacturers such as Nokia, Samsung and LG.
