The PlayStation 3 firmware will be upgraded to version 2.4 including in-game XMB access and a trophies reward system, similar to what the XBOX 360 has now. Unfortunately, details are rather vague at this moment as to what all else the firmware upgrade might add.
The trophies feature will award game achievements for reaching certain levels, conquering cities, etc. and also be associated with the players online PSN profile.
