Photo/Graphics Manipulation

Want Photoshop but don't want to pay for it (there's a piracy joke in here somewhere)? No worries, because free alternatives are available:

GIMP

GIMP URL: http://www.gimp.org/
Description: GNU Image Manipulation Program. Powerful graphics editing and authoring program.
License: Open Source

Paint.NET

Paint.NET URL: http://www.getpaint.net/
Description: Started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, as a replacement for the crappy Windows Paint software. Supports Windows Vista.
License: Freeware

Serif PhotoPlus

Serif PhotoPlus URL: Serif PhotoPlus
Description: Another choice if GIMP and Paint.NET is not your cup of tea. PhotoPlus is probably more oriented towards photo manipulation/correction.
License: Freeware

For 3D, Fractor and Vector graphics tools, have a look at this thread for some freeware inspirations.

Some of this info has been around awhile, but there needs to be this sort of reminder for newer users. I'm often surprised, though,at how often "veterans" are unaware of just how much low/no cost good software is available.Good job,DVDGuy! A quick note:FoxitPDF is a !FREE! PDF reader without all the bloat of Adobe. You'll never go back.
