Step 2: Load the input files, editing and chapter creation

Stil on the "Content" screen, you will note the options available to you on your right to load the input video. For the purpose of this guide, it is assumed you already have some video files, so click on the "Add Video Files" option and load in your video files. Please note that while Nero Vision can accept a wide range of file inputs (AVI, DivX, DV, DAT, DVR-MS, MPG, MP4, VOB, WMV ...), it is best to ensure your input video is in a common video format like DivX/XviD. For MP4 files, Nero will of course support files in the Nero Digital format, but other H.264 formats (eg. encoded using x264) might not be fully compatible.

If you have a series/title of VOB files (eg. VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB ...), then you can load the first in the series (eg. VTS_01_1.VOB) and you will be asked if you wish to automatically load the other files in the series and for Nero Vision to treat it as a single file - normally, you would select "Yes".

Nero Vision: Loading VOB Segments

Nero Vision will analyze the input files. The details of each input file will be displayed. In DVD terms, each of the individual loaded video will be a "Title" set. You can right click on each input file and rename it so that it will be easier to identify. You can also select the video and press the "Up" or "Down" buttons on the left to change the sequence of the video files.

Nero Vision: Loaded Contents

If you wish to edit your video, right click on the listed video and select "Edit".

Nero Vision: Loaded content options

This should open up the video editing screen. If you are familiar with video editing, all the options here should be fairly straight forward. The video preview windows is on the left with the usual options - you can also take a snapshot from the video or record parts of the audio to be used elsewhere or looped into the current video. Please note that you may need to left click on the "Video Track" section of the timeline below to select the video track in order to activate the video split/cut options.

Nero Vision: Video Editing

As mentioned already, the bottom part of the screen is the time line, where any loaded text, special effects and audio tracks are displayed and positioned.

To the top right is 4 tabs. The first tab allows you to load in media files to the project to use here and also later on in menu creation. Loaded files can be dragged onto the timeline (audio or additional video files). The second tab is for video effects, which you can select and drag into the "effects" bar of the time line - there are some pretty cool effects (eg. the "Inside the Matrix" effect), and you can preview the effects using the preview windows.

The third tab is for inserting text into the video, again lots of effects for the fonts and a property window will open allowing you to edit the text, fonts, colors ...

Nero Vision: Video Editing - Texts

The last tab is for transitional effects, which can be applied to the beginning and end of videos. Again, select, drag and position. With any of these effects, you can double click on them on the timeline to open up their properties. Select/highlight these and press the "delete" key on your keyboard to delete them, or use the same option when you right click on the effect. Press the "Next" button when you are finished, and you will be returned to the "Content" screen.

Now we can create chapters for these video files. Right click on any of the loaded video files and select "Create Chapters". This opens up the chapter creation screen.

Creating chapters can be a little tricky sometimes, so follow these instructions to avoid confusion. There is a "Auto Detect Chapters" button that will automatically add in chapters based on scene change, but this can be inaccurate. To manually add in chapters, first press play or drag the position slider to where you want the first chapter to be (you can also input the time of where the chapter should be). Press the "Add Chapter" button (the right most button) to add in a chapter marker - the marker will be shown on the position slider, as well as to the list on the right hand side (complete with snapshot) - the names of these chapters will be shown on the chapter select screen of your DVD menu (or just the number of the chapter is you don't name them). You can right click on the chapter listings on the right hand side (the ones with the snapshots) to rename or delete the chapter markers. Please note that chapters have to be at least one second apart from each other, so if the "Add Chapter" button is grayed out, this is probably the reason.

Nero Vision: Chapter Editing

To create the next chapter, don't use the slider again or change the time code because that will only modify the current chapter marker. Instead, click play, and after the "Add Chapter" button becomes ungrayed or until you've reach the position of the next chapter, click it again to add the chapter. You can now use the slider or change the time for this newly added chapter marker. Repeat until you've added in all your chapters. When you're done, press "Next" to be returned to the "Content" screen. Press "Next" again to leave the "Content" screen and to open the "Select Menu" screen.

When I get to the menu page, it only has the main menu, even after I've created chapters. It will not allow me to make 2 menus. I go to menus to use and select title and chapter menus, then artificial, then select blue light. I have 11 chapters on the movie. But under select a menu, it only has the main menu, it doesn't give me a secondary for the chapters. (Such as where yours says Full Match under Main Menu, mine instead only has main menu and no way to add a secondary. )

five-kids: By default, if you only have one video file, Nero Vision will only create 1 menu, which is the chapters menu. It will only create a main menu, and then chapter menus if you have more than 1 video file/title. It seems to be a limitation of the Nero Vision software. You can get around it by adding another video file (perhaps a trailer or something), and Nero will then make the main and chapter menus.

Nero VisionExpress is a very bad program when it comes about DVD menu creation. It is difficult, time comsuming and has many limitations. If you want to create menu for your DVD, first transcode it with Nero, then import the files into DVDlab Pro, demux them, and create any menu you want: scene selection, audio and/or subtitle setup, movie selection (if you have more videos on one dvd), and so on. And the biggest problem about Nero: it can not handle multiple audio streams in one video.

I have *Nero 7 Ultra Edition Enhanced* and I can't make DVD using Nero Vision 4. It doesn't show *Make DVD...* on *What would you like to do?* Why is this happening? Do I need to get another software upgrade this version or what? Please help.

Vietsandwich: You might need to talk to Nero tech support, since I'm not sure which version you have (some versions, eg. OEM versions of "essential" versions, do not have the MPEG-2/DVD-Video plugin)

I don't even what version i got LOL. But m guessing is that there is two kind of Nero 7. One is the Ultra Edition and the other one is Ultra Edition Enhanced. I don't know if this is true or not and I'm trying my best to go through this. Please help DVDGuy, if it is possible to help, Thank you. I dont want to waste my money if i cant Make DVD.

hey DVDGuy, what kind of plug-in do i need so i can *Make DVD*? Please help and thank you

Vietsandwich: The best thing to do is to contact Nero tech support, they should sort you out (you could try to reinstall the Nero package right now).
Posted by: DVDGuy, 15:42:59, Jun 25, 2007

well, i already contact them and reinstall once. But still have the same problem. I'm guessing i need to buy DVD-VIdeo Plug-In, because i read the guide book for Nero 7 Ultra Edition Enhanced and found out that it don't have DVD-Video Plug-In. But I'm not sure this version work with it. I'm still confuse with my choices.

Vietsandwich: I wouldn't go out and buy it unless Nero tech support has told you to. Let's continue discussions on this thread: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=82561

Nero promises to be a good programme. Well a promise is nothing if it cant be kept. Bug ridden. I have given up on Nerovision 4 for menus and fades. Attempt anything like this, it crashes. At the moment it can manage without having to deal with menus etc. Upgrades available, as suggested by tech support that have fixed bugs-but we have to pay to repair a programme that cost us in the first place and never worked. Bit like buying a second hand car-very exciting, it may or may not work and you have to pay through the nose for a repair that may be dodgy as well. MAny thanks Ahead, you may be going ahead with our money, but we are all going backwards with your dodgy software

Does anyone know about how to make a movie by adding your own video files (let's say that you captured with your digital camera)? I am trying to do that but instead of recognizing my files as .avi it adds them as picture files thus in the preview the file isn't moving (it is still as a picture). Does anyone know how can i fix this? Thanks in advance!

Is anyone else having problems uploading images and sound clips for the menus? Every time I go to upload something new, the program crashes and closes itself and goes back to the Nero SmartStart screen. Any advice on what to do from here?

If I play my completed dvd on the PC...it plays 16:9. If I play it on my TV...it is full screen. I chose the 16:9 option in Nero Vision. (from Nero Ultra 7) This dvd has menus and chapters. The info for the video as Vision sees it reads: "Target video options: 720 x 480 (CCIR-601 D1) -- 16:9" The video is already a .vob...so i'm not converting an avi. Any ideas on this? I thought that perhaps if I eliminated the menus and chapters...that it would work...but i'd hate to lose all my chapters. Perhaps I can at least take the finished product from Vision and import it into another program that will properly tag the dvd as 16:9...and I won't have to make all the chapters again? Thanks in advance. :)

Perhaps this info is also helpful. Again...the aspect ratio is set to 16:9...not 'auto'. Maybe my TV/DVD player is the problem? ================================= Book Type setting: 'Automatic' Audio format: Automatic Sample format: Automatic Encoding mode: High Quality (2-Pass VBR) Nero SmartEncoding: Automatic Number of titles: 2 1. VTS_01.0001 (Video Title, 2h 07m 33s, 28 chapters) - Audio SmartEncoding ratio: 100.0 % - Video SmartEncoding ratio: 98.4 % 2. VTS_02.0001 (Video Title, 0h 56m 13s, 22 chapters) - Audio SmartEncoding ratio: 100.0 % - Video SmartEncoding ratio: 97.3 % Number of menus: 3 - Main menu (1 page) - Menu for VTS_01.0001 (7 pages) - Menu for VTS_02.0001 (6 pages)

Hmmm...forgot to add that I use Vision to burn it to my hdd. Then I use Slysoft AnyDVD to burn that to a double-layer DVD. But I can see in AnyDVD that it too recognizes the file as 16:9. So I don't think AnyDVD is the problem. Thanks again.

For some reason when I create my own menu, not using the smart 3D option, the burn process stops almost right after I click the burn button. I've made a DVD with the Smart 3D menu, but when I use my own picture and backround options, it will not burn my DVD. Any idea why this is?
