The reason for the price drop said Sony, is cause the demand for Blu-Ray products are higher now and the price of production is cheaper
Currently the list price of the BDP-S300 model Blu-Ray player is $599. After the price drop, they will go down to $499. To me $499 is still a steep price to pay for the potentially next Beta-Max player.

One could speculate the price drop is do to Toshiba selling its HD-DVD players for less than $300 but, Sony is denying that.
