High Definition DVD Zone
With the two major competing formats, Blu-ray and HD DVD, both launching this year, 2006 marks an important year for high definition DVDs. As with any launch, and more so due to the competing nature of both High Def DVD formats, there is bound to be lots of questions, and perhaps not as many unbiased answers. Regardless, it will prove to be an exciting time for DVD and home theatre fans.
Lots of issues will decide which format ultimately wins the battle, including copy protection, cost of hardware/movies, studio support and of course, consumer acceptance. With the upcoming launch of the Xbox-360's HD DVD reader drive and the PS3's native support for Blu-ray, it brings a whole new dimension into the battle for our hard earned money.
Then there is also H.264, the new video compression format for Blu-ray/HD DVD. H.264 can also be used as a DivX/XviD substitute, offering even better compression ratios.
